Recap: Summer Meetup at Bivouac Adventure Lodge

Last week, we had a wonderful summer meetup at Bivouac Ciderworks’ Adventure Lodge, bringing together about 25 storytellers, writers, designers, creatives, and marketers working in San Diego County’s social justice and climate action space. Thank you to all who joined us for connections and tasty ciders!

The icebreaker question of the day was, “What is one activity you might have been found engaging in when you were a child?” Answers ranged from drawing, to world-building, to designing clothing, to writing our first lines of HTML and CSS, to creating our own sensory collections of insects and/or bakery wax paper 😝, to fighting in the woods with swords made of foraged bamboo.

Whatever your answer, we hope you’re able to reconnect with that childhood-level of embodied joy and curiosity once again!

We’re continuing to keep this space casual, focused on making connections and finding companionship in our work. Many of us work on small teams, as entrepreneurs, or on projects with enormous goals—like transforming major systems that underly society. The reality is, we often work with enormous expectations and not a lot of resources. Finding companionship, solidarity, and opportunities to collaborate are all critical for our resilience as creatives, and for doing the jobs we set out to do: to shift narrative power, in order to realize a more just and equitable world.

What to do now—

  • Engage in other creative networking spaces, like Creative Mornings San Diego
We’re lucky to have options for creatives, storytellers, and problem solvers across our region to connect! While our space is a small and informal one, Creative Mornings is a great way to plug in to a much broader network with monthly events.

  • Join our Slack channel
Our Slack channel is still a relatively sleepy, emerging space, but we’re gathering a group of folks there for potential future conversations about skill exchange, events, collaborations, and more.

  • Stay tuned for our next event!
Next meetup or gathering will be announced soon, likely in the fall or winter this year. We’ll be emailing our past event attendees as well as subscribers (subscribe to updates below). We look forward to seeing you then!
